Men's Golf Maintains Lead At Seminole Intercollegiate

3/7/2009 | Men's Golf

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. The 25th-ranked Ole Miss men’s golf team fired a 6-under 282 in the second round of the Seminole Intercollegiate Saturday to maintain its lead heading into the final round at the Golden Eagle Country Club.

At 570, the Rebels lead Virginia (571) by one. The Cavaliers carded a 5-under 283 in the second round, but Ole Miss played the last four holes 5-under to hold the one shot advantage.  Vanderbilt is in third at 576, Florida State is fourth at 581, and Arkansas is fifth at 583.

Freshman Sean Dale, sophomore Jonathan Randolph and senior Jesse Speirs all carded a 2-under 70 to lead the Rebels.  Freshman Joe David posted an even par 72 and Stefan Strandlund finished with a 75.

David was +2 through 14, but made birdie on 15 and 17 to finish even and remains tied for the individual lead with two other players at -5.   He is trying to become the first individual winner for the Rebels since Kyle Ellis won the USA Spring Golf Classic in 2006.

Dale birdied the last hole to get to 2-under on his round, three under for the tournament.  He is tied for fourth just two back of the leaders.  Randolph and Strandlund also birdied the final hole.

"We got off to a great start today, and played the front side -5,” head coach Ernest Ross said.  “The front is the tougher of the two nines, and shooting under par there is a strong score.  We didn’t play well in the middle of the round, but finished strong going -5 on the last 4 holes.

“Virginia made a great rally, and they were -6 on the last four holes.  It will be a great battle tomorrow, and we are really looking forward to the challenge.  I am really proud of our two freshmen. We have a lot to play for tomorrow.”

The Rebels will be going for their first win of the year and their fifth consecutive top-five finish when they tee off the final round Sunday at 8:20 a.m. CT.  To follow the Rebels during the final round go to www.OleMissSports.com and click on the live scoring link in the calendar box.
