4/14/2009 | Volleyball

OXFORD, Miss. Four members of the Ole Miss volleyball team are set to compete in the second annual “Fiesta On Siesta Key” beach volleyball tournament sponsored by the Southeastern Conference coaches the weekend of April 18.

The tournament will be played at Siesta Key, Fla.

Emily Jones and Rachel Kieckhaefer will make up one team, while Caitlin Keefe and Allison Weber will be the second team submitted for competition by the Rebels. Each team comprises of two players and is a round robin tournament by pool before entering an elimination playoff.

Last season, the team of Jones and Kieckhaefer lost in the semi-finals of the Gold Division playoff, while Weber competed with teammate Catherine Heck to advance to the semifinals of the Silver Division playoff.

“The Fiesta is actually a number of beach/sand volleyball tournaments in one,” Tournament Co-Director David Carstenson said. “The event is comprised of the SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championships and the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge. Tournament Co-Director Tom Collett and I are excited that the SEC Coaches have chosen to bring their event to Siesta Key, where it will be the showcase event of the Fiesta.”

Last spring, the SEC coaches contested the first-ever beach volleyball tournament held by a Division I conference, when it was played at the University of Florida’s Southwest Recreation Center courts.

Each of the 11 SEC schools (Vanderbilt does not sponsor volleyball) will participate in the SEC Coaches Beach Volleyball Championships and other schools from around the country will compete in the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Challenge, which also will take place that day as part of the Fiesta on Siesta Key.
