Rebels Not Looking To Share Title

4/16/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The No. 3 nationally ranked Ole Miss men’s tennis team has already clinched a share of the SEC Championship, but with a win over Mississippi State Saturday in Starkville, they will claim it for themselves.

The Rebels captured a share of the championship as well as their eighth straight SEC West title last weekend with wins over LSU and Arkansas on the road.   Ole Miss previously won the overall SEC title in back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997 and again in 2004 and 2005.

This year’s team can also finish undefeated in league play for the second time in the history of the program, joining the 1996 squad with a perfect conference record.

With five overall SEC titles to his resume’ head coach Billy Chadwick now trails only legendary football coach John Vaught in SEC Championships won.  Vaught led the Rebels to six SEC titles during his illustrious career.

A huge reason for the Rebels success this season has been the leadership provided by seniors Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge.

“The seniors know what it takes to be successful in the SEC,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “They have been able to impart that to the four freshmen.  In addition, we have gotten outstanding play from junior Kalle Norberg in singles and sophomore Tucker Vorster in doubles.”

Five teams from the SEC have been ranked in the nation’s top 10, and the Rebels have taken down seven top 25 teams on their way to a 10-0 league record.

Devin Britton, Otto Sauer, Marcel Thiemann and Chris Thiemann have all been named SEC Freshman of the Week a total of six times.  In addition, they have combined to clinch 12 of the Rebels’ 20 wins this year.

The freshmen got a taste of the rivalry between Ole Miss and Mississippi State earlier this year when the two teams met in the annual River Hills Mississippi Cup.  The Rebels won that match 4-2 for their 22nd in a row against the Bulldogs.

Saturday’s match at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre will begin at 12 p.m.  For those unable to attend, live scoring will be available.  To access the live scoring, go to www.OleMissSports.com and click on the link in the calendar box.
