SEC Champion Rebels So Close To Top Spot In Rankings

4/21/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The SEC Champion Ole Miss men’s tennis team is back at No. 2 in the nation in this week’s Campbell/ITA Rankings, and just a little over a point separates top-ranked Virginia (76.9) and the Rebels (75.3).

The rest of the top 10 includes Ohio State, Georgia, UCLA, Tennessee, Baylor, Stanford, Southern California and Florida.   The SEC boasts six teams in the top 13 with Kentucky at No. 12 and Alabama at No. 13.

In the individual rankings, the senior duo of Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge remained at No. 1 in doubles.  Berg is ranked No. 16 in singles, freshman Devin Britton is No. 37, and junior Kalle Norberg is No. 39.   Norberg was the only SEC player to go undefeated in conference.

Ole Miss downed Mississippi State 6-1 last Saturday to clinch the SEC Championship and go undefeated in league play.  It marked the fifth overall title in the history of the program and the second time to post a perfect conference record.

The Rebels are the top seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament which begins Thursday in Auburn, Ala.  They earned a first round bye and will begin defense of their championship Friday at 11 a.m., against the winner of the match between the No. 8 seed LSU and the No. 9 seed South Carolina.
