OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss Rebel softball team will travel to No. 7Georgia this weekend to face the Bulldogs in a three-game SEC series. The two-teams will play a doubleheader on Friday and finish the series on Saturday. Saturday’s contest will be televised by Fox Sports South. Bernie Guenther and Cheri Kempf will serve as announcers for Saturday’s broadcast.
The Rebels are lead by reigning SEC Player of the Week Lauren Grill. The junior All American batted .500 last week with four homers and nine RBI. She collected six hits and five walks on the week for a .647 on-base percentage and slugged an astonishing 1.583, as she totaled 19 bases in four games.
The Tualatin, Ore., native tied a career-high with two home runs, including the game winner in the fifth-inning, in the Rebels non-conference victory over Mississippi State on Wednesday. She also picked up a single and three RBI against the Bulldogs. She hit the game-winning, three-run shot in the fifth in the win over Kentucky on Saturday and picked up a solo homer and a two-run double against the Wildcats on Sunday. In her last eight games, Grill leads the team with four homers and is batting. 440.
Freshman Corrine Doornberg continues to pace the Rebels with a hot bat, leading the team with a .329 average. Last week Doornberg led the squad with a .636 batting average, collecting seven hits in 11 at-bats. In the circle, junior Becky Nye has a team-high 12 wins with a 2.50 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 168.0 innings pitched.
Georgia enters the weekend with 26-7 overall record and a 7-5 mark in SEC play. The Bulldogs knocked off No. 22 Georgia Tech on Wednesday after dropping two-of-three to No. 4 Alabama last weekend. Sophomore Alisa Goler leads UGA with a .457 batting average, 12 home runs and 52 RBI. In circle, senior Christie Hamilton has posted a 13-5 record with a team-low 1.57 ERA.
The Rebels trail Georgia 23-7 in the all-time series and dropped a doubleheader to the Bulldogs a year ago. The last win for Ole Miss over UGA came in 2003.
