NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Darryl Harris makes it now 10 members of the 2008-09 Ole Miss squad on their way to the National Football League, as the offensive lineman has inked a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs.
A native of Clarksdale, Miss., Harris was a rare five-year letterwinner for the Rebels, after earning a sixth year of eligibility for medical hardship. He made 22 starts at four different positions over his career, including nine starts at center, eight at left guard, four at right tackle and one at left tackle. As a senior, Harris saw action in 12 games and started eight, including the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. He helped the Rebels rank second in the SEC in rushing (186.5 ypg) and fourth in sacks allowed (1.54 pg).
Other Rebels inking NFL deals this offseason include Jason Cook with Baltimore, Tony Fein with Seattle, Maurice Miller with Tampa Bay, Ashlee Palmer with Buffalo and Jermey Parnell with New Orleans.
The NFL Draft saw Michael Oher (Baltimore) and Peria Jerry (Atlanta) become the first tandem in Ole Miss history to be first-round NFL draft picks in the same year. Mike Wallace was chosen in the third round by Pittsburgh and Jamarca Sanford in the seventh round by Minnesota, giving the Rebels four selections in one draft for the first time since 2004.
