Henson Named SEC Player Of The Week

5/18/2009 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. Senior catcher Kyle Henson has been named Southeastern Conference Player of the Week for the final weekend of the regular season, the league office announced on Monday.

Henson helped push the Rebels to a share of the Southeastern Conference Championship over the weekend as he hit .500 (6x12) with six runs scored and eight RBI against 16th-ranked Arkansas. The senior posted a .971 slugging percentage as he belted out a home run and a double and posted a .571 on base percentage.

The sweep of Arkansas was the second road sweep in conference play this season for the Rebels and was the third series sweep in SEC play this season. It also helped the Rebels claim the program’s first SEC Championship since the 1977 season when Ole Miss posted a league-best 15-9 record and claimed the inaugural SEC Tournament in Oxford.

In Friday’s 7-5 win, Henson was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored to help push the Rebels to the win as he started at designated hitter. Saturday, Henson moved back behind the plate and went 1-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored as he tallied a base-clearing double to help put the game out of reach in the 9-3 Rebel win to clinch the series.

Sunday, Henson again had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored to help lead the Rebels to the series sweep and the conference title.

The Rebels will return to action on Wednesday, May 20, when Ole Miss will face off against Georgia in the first round of the SEC Tournament at 1:30 p.m. at Regions Park.
