COLLEGE STATION, Texas Ole Miss freshman Devin Britton advanced to the second round of singles at the NCAA Championships Wednesday, taking out Wisconsin’s Mortiz Baumann in straight sets at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

At 5-5 in the first set, Britton held serve and then broke Baumann win it 7-5.  The ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year then gained an early break in the second and held for 6-3 to advance to a second round meeting against Dominic Inglot of Virginia.  Britton has now won nine straight.

The Mississippi native’s teammates were not as fortunate, both falling in first round action.  Senior Jonas Berg won his first set against Texas’ Dimitar Kutrovsky 6-3, but lost the next two 6-1, 7-5 to end the year at 26-13 overall.

Junior Kalle Norberg fell to Southern Cal’s Steven Johnson 6-3, 7-6(2) snapping his 16-match winning streak.  Norberg, who battled back to even the second set before losing it in the breaker, ends the year with a 32-4 overall record.

Berg will team up with fellow senior Bram ten Berge in the doubles Thursday.  The top-seeded pair will face Inglot and his partner, Michael Shabaz, of Virginia in the first round.
