Men's Tennis Ends Season Ranked No. 4 Nationally

5/22/2009 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team ended the year ranked No. 4 in the nation, as the final Campbell/ITA National Rankings were released Friday.  It marks the seventh time in the history of the program for the Rebels to finish the year in the top five.

“We had an outstanding year,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “It was a total team effort from top to bottom in the lineup.  We got great leadership from the seniors (Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge) as well as the other returning players (Kalle Norberg and Tucker Vorster), and then our freshmen (Devin Britton, Otto Sauer, Chris Thiemann and Marcel Thiemann) played a huge role in us finishing fourth in the nation, winning the SEC regular season and tournament championships and advancing to the NCAA Elite Eight.”

The Rebels won the program’s fifth SEC Championship in a year when the league had as many as five teams in the top 10.  Overall, seven teams ended the year in the top 25.   NCAA Champion Southern California earned the top spot followed by Ohio State, Virginia, Ole Miss and UCLA rounding out the top five.

Ole Miss posted a school record 27-3 overall mark, and went 11-0 in the SEC, becoming the second Rebel netter team to accomplish that feat.

A league-leading five Rebels earned All-SEC honors, while Chadwick was named Coach of the Year.  All four freshmen earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors a total of six times, while Mississippi native Devin Britton was named the ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year.

The Rebels earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Championships and took out LSU in Baton Rouge and Texas A&M on their home court to advance to the Elite Eight for the ninth time, before losing a hard fought 4-3 match to UCLA.

The future looks very bright, as Ole Miss returns six players from this year’s team for 2009-10.
