Sara Grantham Qualifies For U.S. Public Links

5/27/2009 | Women's Golf

COVINGTON, Ga. Sara Grantham, who recently completed her junior year on the Ole Miss women’s golf team, qualified for the prestigious U.S. Public Links Championship Wednesday, shooting an even par 71 to earn co-medalist honors here at The Oaks Course.

Grantham was among 31 players competing over 18 holes for five spots and two alternate positions into the Championship.  She tied with Auburn sophomore Cydney Clanton for medalist honors.

“It’s definitely very exciting,” Grantham said.   “I went home after (NCAA) Regionals. We were a little disappointed.  I went back to the basics with my instructor.  I’ve been hitting the ball really well the past week and felt ready to go.  I just went out there and tried to have fun.

“It’s big in qualifiers to make as many pars as you can.  You don’t have room for mistakes. You have to play smart.  I tried to hit a lot of greens and make a few putts.  I am really excited.  This is my first big national amateur event to make.”

Grantham, who finished second on the team in stroke average this past year, will be one of two seniors on the 2009-10 squad.

“This is quite an honor to qualify for the U.S. Public Links and a tribute to how hard she works at her game to be the best she can be,” head coach Michele Drinkard said.  “We can’t wait for her to tee it up at this prestigious national tournament.”

The 33rd annual U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links Championship will be held at Red Tail Golf Club in Devens, Mass., June 22-27.  The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
