Ole Miss Softball History

5/29/2009 | Softball

The University of Mississippi was one of nine Southeastern Conference schools to begin fielding a fast-pitch varsity softball team in 1997. The inaugural squad had a 22-41 overall record under head coach Joyce Maudie.

The Rebels began playing at the current site of the Ole Miss Softball Complex in 1998. The complex received significant upgrades prior to the 2006 season. The $1.2 million project included one of the few softball-only indoor hitting facilities in the nation, as well as a state-of-the-art press box, refurbished dugouts, new video and audio systems and upgrades to the grandstands, which include a center chair-back seating section.

Ole Miss has made strides in recent years on its way to becoming a force in the SEC and the nation. The 2005 squad recorded the first winning record in program history with a 30-28 record. The following year, under new head coach Missy Dickerson, the Rebels closed out the season with a bang, winning seven of their last eight conference games to advance to the conference tournament for the first time in program history. Ole Miss has now earned SEC Tournament bids in each of Dickerson's three seasons at the helm.
