MISSOURI HEAD COACH TIM JAMIESON
Opening statement
"My congratulations to Monmouth for another great year. I know they were excited to be here. We are happy to be playing again tomorrow. Our plans were to throw Kyle (Gibson) and have him go as far as he could to save the bullpen. If we do have the chance to play two games tomorrow, we will have everyone well rested, and we will take our shot with that. I thought he did a great job. He didn't feel his best out there. We went out there and competed and got the bats going. We scored some runs so that made it easier."
On the decision to throw Kyle Gibson
"It was a combination. I came out and watched the Monmouth-Ole Miss game, and I thought Monmouth battled. They also threw their best pitcher today. It was a combination of needing someone to go deep in the game to save the bullpen and also the fact that we haven't been scoring runs. That made it very clear as to what I needed to do."
On his plans for the first game on Sunday
"I will talk to Coach (Tony) Vitello about it. I guess it will be (Ian) Berger in the first game with everyone available except for Kyle. If we don't use Berger in the first game, we will probably use Scooter (Hicks) or Johnny Wholestaff or some combination of that."
Junior RHP Kyle Gibson
On the decision for Gibson's start
"I think I found out today when I showed up to the park and I saw my name on a sheet that said, Be prepared to win.' As soon as I saw that, I knew I needed to get in the zone. I knew in my mind I needed to prepare for a pretty good team."
On his arm
"It's not hurt. My forearm has tightened up a little bit just from the long season. It's something that I have had the trainers work on and try to make it just as good as I can. It's just one of those things that you have to battle through tightness once in a while. I felt real good in the first couple of innings. Whenever we get into long innings, that is when it tightens up."
Senior 1B Steve Gray
On Missouri's two home runs versus Monmouth
"It's always good to go out and score runs like we did today, especially after yesterday's performance when we didn't swing all that well. We came out and had some good at bats, and hopefully we can carry that confidence into tomorrow."
On getting the first run of the game
"That helped get our offense going a little bit. There were some miscues by their team, and that helped get our offense going a little bit. It's always big to get out to a lead like that, especially with Gibson on the mound, and let the offense do the work."
MONMOUTH HEAD COACH DEAN EHEHALT
Opening Statement
"We ran into another good pitcher today. I thought we played real hard. I thought our kids competed well this weekend, and I am really proud of the season that we had. We can't put everything in one basket and judge today's disappointment. Naturally we all wanted to win. We've had a great season, but we ran into two very good ball clubs this weekend and two outstanding pitchers that did a great job. I thought our two starting pitchers did a great job this weekend keeping us close and giving us a chance, but we were unable to get a breakthrough hit and get some momentum early. I am really proud of our guys."
On facing (Kyle) Gibson
"I thought we were going to see Gibson. If you're in the loser's bracket you have to get to Sunday. He was their best guy available to throw. I wasn't so much concerned about who we were going to see as I was concerned about our guys. We haven't gotten caught up in a lot of that stuff all year. The kid's a big time pitcher no doubt about it. I thought that we were going to see him, but I didn't get all wrapped up in that."
Senior OF Brett Holland
On facing (Kyle) Gibson
"I myself was excited to face a kid of that kind of caliber. I knew it was going to be tough for us. He pitched a heck of a ballgame. He was throwing three pitches for strikes, especially to right-handers his slider was tough. He threw me a couple of change-ups and he was spotting each pitch to make it really tough on the hitters."
On the season
"I am disappointed, I am senior and this is my last chance to win. At the same time I am proud that we got here, because this was a really tough season where we were up and down. We just turned it on and got here. I am really proud of my team."
Junior RHP Ryan Buch
Effects of long 2nd inning
"I tried not to let anything affect me. We had some pop-ups and foul balls that could have gone either way, but the bottom line is I didn't make my pitches, and that's my fault."
