6/1/2009 | Football
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In the 63rd Annual Birmingham News Spring SEC Football Preview, Ole Miss and many of its key personnel were named among the best in the conference for the 2009 season, as voted on by the league's 12 sports information directors.
In a ranking of all 12 teams, the Rebels were tabbed third overall with 98 points, behind Florida (121) and Alabama (103), and were the only team other than the Gators to receive a first-place vote. Ole Miss was rated second in the Western Division (20 points) behind the Crimson Tide (25).
Points were assigned on basis of 11 for first-place votes, 10 for second, 9 for third, etc., and an SID could not vote for his/her own school.
Polling the "2009 Best of the SEC", Rebel quarterback Jevan Snead was voted the league's Best Passer and was named runner-up to Tim Tebow for Most Valuable Player and for Best Leader. Ole Miss all-purpose threat Dexter McCluster was labeled the Most Underrated Player, and Joshua Shene was the Best Place-Kicker.
On the News' Preseason All-SEC teams, Shene joined offensive lineman John Jerry on the first team, while Snead, wide receiver Shay Hodge, defensive lineman Greg Hardy and cornerback Marshay Green were honored on the second team.
Ole Miss opens the 2009 campaign Sept 6 at Memphis and host Southeastern Louisiana Sept. 19 in the home-opener. Click here for season tickets or call 662-915-7167 or 1-888-732-8587 for in-state calls.
