OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss track and field sophomore Lee Ellis Moore was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American third team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the organization and publication announced Thursday.

A native of Cordova, Tenn., with a 4.00 GPA in biological science, Moore performed as one of the best 400 meter hurdlers in the country this season.  In fact, he was named an All-American in the 400 meter hurdles after racing to a ninth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 50.53.

He became just the second male athlete in school history to earn the distinction of All-American in the 400 meter hurdles, joining former Ole Miss great Donavan Bassett.

Moore set a new school record in the 400 meter hurdles in the preliminaries of the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a time of 49.87 en route to a first place finish.

In addition, Moore finished in the top-10 of the 400 meter hurdles in every meet in which he competed, which included three individual titles.  He won the event at the Rhodes Invitational, the Alabama Relays and the Mississippi Open.

He posted a fourth place finish and scored for the Rebels at the SEC Outdoor Championships with a time of 50.01.  He went on to automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships by placing second at the MidEast Regional with a time of 50.45.

“Lee Ellis embodies all the qualities that you look for when you describe the true student-athlete,” Ole Miss head coach Joe Walker said.  “He has an incredible desire to be both an excellent student and athlete, and I think that he has accomplished that both on the track and in the classroom.”

Moore is slated to compete in the 400 meter hurdles June 25-28 at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District and All-America teams are voted on by CoSIDA members across the country and are divided into districts. Student athletes who are selected to the All-District first team are eligible for the national ballot.
