Devin Britton In Doubles Quarters At French Open Junior

PARIS Ole Miss NCAA Singles Champion Devin Britton has switched from the hard courts to the clay courts, advancing to the third round in the French Open Junior Doubles Championship with fellow American Jordan Cox.  The pair knocked out the top seed from Argentina in Wednesday’s second round.

After dropping his opening singles match to the 11^th seed (Gianni Mina) from France, Britton has rebounded in doubles, posting consecutive three set victories, including the win over top-seeded Andrea Collarini and Agustin Velotti of Argentina.  After dropping the opening set 6-2, Britton and Cox came back to take the second set 7-5.  They won the third set in a supertiebreaker, 10-5.

The American duo, who trained together at Nick Bollettieri Academy, will face Patrk Brydolf (Sweden) and Radim Urbanek (Czech Republic) in the quarterfinals.

A native of Jackson, Miss., the 18-year-old Britton became the youngest of the three all-time freshmen to win the NCAA singles title which includes 19-year-old John McEnroe of Stanford in 1978.  

Britton, who finished with a 29-9 overall record, made plenty of history in his first season with the Rebels.  In addition to winning the first NCAA singles title for the Rebels, he became the first Rebel freshman to earn All-America honors.  He earned All-SEC honors, made the SEC All-Freshman Team and was named the 2009 ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year.
