Grantham Loses On First Playoff Hole At Southern Amateur
6/3/2009 | Women's Golf
Grantham, who shot a 2-under 70, sank a 30-footer for birdie on the par-5 17th, to send the match to the 18th. On 18, Grantham drove the ball on a very aggressive line and had 105 left to the pin. She hit her second to 15 feet and drilled it for birdie.
On the playoff hole Grantham made par on the par-5 No. 1, but
“I played really solid all day and came out with 16 pars,” Grantham said. “I couldn’t get any birdies to drop. I knew I had to make the putt on 17. On 18 it’s a down-hill par 4 over the water. I hit a great drive and only had a nine iron in. I made the putt. She (Davis) made a lot of good birdie putts. I was excited to get into the playoff hole. I hit a bad drive and didn’t set myself up to make a birdie. I felt great and played a bogey free round. This is definitely a positive for me.”
“Sara had a great tournament,” said head coach Michele Drinkard, who was a spectator this week. “We are proud of her and what she accomplished. A goal this summer for the team is to compete at a higher level, because you learn so much and improve at competing when you play in stronger national tournaments.”
In the championship consolation bracket, rising sophomore Haley Millsap defeated Carley Truitt 1 up, while incoming freshman Haley Sanders dropped her match to Meghan Green 1 up.
