Ole Miss Earns Sports Illustrated Cover Photo Again

OXFORD, Miss. -- For the second time in less than a year, Ole Miss will grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, this time for the annual college football preview edition. The issue will hit newsstands on Wednesday.
The magazine features Rebel quarterback Jevan Snead and center Daverin Geralds with the headline "Party Crashers: The Rebels Have The Firepower To Shake Up The BCS". The cover also lists SI's preseson top-10 rankings with Ole Miss at No. 6.
The Ole Miss cover is one of four regional editions of the college football preview issue, with the other three covers featuring Oklahoma State, Oregon and Penn State.
In addition to the No. 6 ranking, the Rebels are SI's pick to win the SEC West (11-1 overall record, 7-1 conference) before falling to Florida in the conference championship game. This marks the fourth time Ole Miss has been featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated, with the most recent occurence coming Sept. 30 of last year after the 31-30 upset at No. 4 Florida. The Sept. 24, 1962 college football preview showcased the Rebelettes, while Archie Manning "Idol of Ole Miss" donned the Sept. 14, 1970 edition. The Manning 1970 cover was also a part of the Sept. 26, 1996 issue along with son Peyton.
In addition, SI published an SEC Preview Special Issue on July 29 that included Coach Houston Nutt in one of four regional covers.
Several former Rebels have also appeared on the front of Sports Illustrated as professional athletes, including New York Giants quarterback Charley Conerly on Dec. 3, 1956, PGA golfer Cary Middlecoff on June 10, 1957 and Giants QB Eli Manning on Jan. 28, 2008 and Feb. 8, 2008.
