Preseason Report 08.12: Offensive Timing Improves

8/13/2009 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebel football team continued to work in preparation of the 2009 season opener against Memphis on Wednesday with practice in shoulder pads and helmets in front of a myriad of fans and media.

Also in attendance for the early portions of practice was new Ole Miss Chancellor Dan Jones, who saw the Rebels go through a spirited workout that pleased head coach Houston Nutt.

"It was a very good day today and I thought we improved in a lot of areas," Nutt said. "The fundamentals and timing between the quarterbacks and receivers is getting better. The defense is averaging about two scores a day. I love that on the defensive side."

Jerrell Powe and Kendrick Lewis both stood out on the defensive side of the ball, with each player scoring on the afternoon. Fon Ingram also came up with a turnover for the defense.

The key to Nutt will be conditioning as practices continue in the summer days.

"I'm excited about where we are right now. As we get into a little soreness, the pads start getting a little heavier and the sun comes out a little bit longer. Here we go; We'll find out what we've got."

Ole Miss will practice again on Thursday as the Rebels continue to work toward the season opener on Sunday, September 6, at the University of Memphis. Thursday's workout is open to the public and begins at 5:45 p.m.
