Rebels Picked Second In SEC West By League Coaches
8/19/2009 | Volleyball
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss volleyball team was picked to finish second in the Southeastern Conference's Western Division by a vote of the league's coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
The Rebels were picked behind LSU who won the Western Division last season. Ole Miss finished second in the West in 2008. The Rebels are picked to finish ahead of Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas and Mississippi State, respectively.
"Losing the senior class we did, this shows the respect that people have for our recruiting class and our returning talent that they would pick us so highly," said Ole Miss head coach Joe Getzin. "We've got lots of work to do to make sure we achieve our goals. We have to get everyone integrated into the system and playing well to meet expectations."
The Florida Gators were selected to win the 2009 Southeastern Conference volleyball title in a preseason vote by the league's 11 coaches. The Gators have claimed 18 consecutive SEC titles, which is the NCAA record for consecutive conference title wins. Coming off a 27-4 season and their 17th NCAA regional semifinal appearance in 18 years, the Gators also hold the nation's longest stretch of 26-win seasons with 18 straight.
The Gators were voted to win the Eastern Division with 16 total points, followed by Kentucky with 17 total points. The Gators earned seven first-place votes while the Wildcats received three. The Tennessee Lady Vols are picked to finish third in the division with 25 points and one first-place vote. South Carolina and Georgia round out the East, respectively. Florida finished 18-2 in SEC action. With a 26-6 overall record and a 17-3 league record, the Wildcats recorded their second consecutive 20-win season since 1993 and a school record in conference wins.
Ole Miss will begin its season on Friday, Aug. 28 at the University of Missouri when the Rebels take on Texas State in the first match of the Missouri Tiger Invitational.
