Preseason Report 08.26: Veterans Continue To Shine

8/26/2009 | Football

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss football team continued to hit the practice field and put in work in preparation for the season-opener as the Rebels are 11 days out from the first game of the season against Memphis.

It was a solid day of practice in the eyes of head coach Houston Nutt as the veteran players continued to perform well while the younger players showed flashes of brilliance throughout the afternoon heat.

"It was good to have a little heat today and a little warm weather," Nutt said. "We started out pretty good, but we have to finish better. Some of our young backs lost their concentration at the end and we had too many balls hit the ground and too many missed assignments.

"Our defense for the most part did a good job. Kendrick Lewis did a good job of leading and was very vocal. He picked up a couple of turnovers."

The running backs were a position of note with Nutt as he iterated that the veterans continued to hold onto the top spots on the depth chart at the moment.

"It's our older guys first - Brandon Bolden, Cordera Eason and Enrique Davis because of experience," Nutt said. "The other guys are showing flashes and we've told them all to be ready because they may get their opportunity."

The Rebels open the 2009 season at Memphis on Sunday, Sept., 6 at the Liberty Bowl. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
