Preseason Report 08.27: Kicking Game Taking Shape
8/27/2009 | Football
"It was a pretty good day of practice today," Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said. "You are getting to that point where they are anxious to hit somebody else. We have some good days left to really work hard, and I'm going to put them into shoulder pads and shorts tomorrow."
Nutt went to on to discuss some of the specifics that the Rebels will be working on in Friday's practice.
"Tomorrow we are going to go through some extensive kicking situations," Nutt said. "We are also going to put them in some different situations at the end of the half and towards the end of the game and just let them keep playing the game."
Nutt also praised the work of Rebel senior center Daverin Geralds.
"He is intelligent, he works at it, he studies the game and is just very, very unselfish," Nutt said. "He would do anything for his teammates."
The Rebels kickers went through an extensive workout, and the kicking game is another aspect of note that Nutt continues to feel strongly about.
"I've been really pleased with (Andrew) Ritter and David Hankins," Nutt said. "Both of them are just kicking the ball excellent. We can play either one of them, and I'm just really excited about it."
Nutt mentioned that the kickoff return game is beginning to take shape and that Brandon Bolden, Cordera Eason, Cassius Vaughn and Marshay Green are all candidates to return kicks.
The Rebels open the 2009 season at Memphis on Sunday, Sept., 6 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
