Marcel Thiemann Leads Rebel Netters At SEC Indoor

ATLANTA -- Sophomore Ole Miss men's tennis player Marcel Thiemann led the Rebels Friday on day one of the SEC Indoor Championships, advancing to the third round in singles and the second round in doubles with his brother, Chris.
Marcel, ranked No. 61 in the nation, had a first round bye and then advanced to the round of 16 with a straight set win over Florida newcomer Bob van Overbeek. Thiemann won a first set tiebreaker 7-6(3) and then took the second 6-4. He will face the No. 8 seed, Drake Bernstein (Georgia), in the third round Saturday.
Later in the evening, Thiemann teamed up with his twin brother, Chris, to edge the LSU team of Neal Skupski and Stefan Szacinski, 9-8(6). The LSU team was seeded 5-8.
In other singles action, iunior Tucker Vorster, ranked No. 49 in singles, defeated Matt Davis of Kentucky in the first round 7-5, 6-2 before falling to Florida's Joey Burkhardt 6-4, 6-4. Sophomore Chris Thiemann lost two tough tiebreakers to LSU's Sebastian Carlsson in the first round. Freshman Adrian Forberg Skogeng had a first round bye before dropping a 6-2, 7-5 match to UK's Alex Musialek in the second round.
Several team members got their first taste of the nation's toughest league, making their debut on Friday, after joining the Rebels just days ago. German native Jonas Lütjen faced off against one of the top freshmen in the country, Tennessee's Tennys Sandgren and dropped a tough 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 decision. Harry Fowler, of the IMG Bollettieri Academy, lost to LSU junior Julien Gauthier, 7-5, 6-3. Jaime Vazquez Catoira of Spain succumbed to Artem Ilyushin of Mississippi State 6-1, 6-2.
Play continues Saturday morning with consolation singles at 8 a.m. CT. The SEC Indoor features many of the nation's top players in a league that boasted four teams in the top 10 and seven in the top 25 last year.
