No. 21 Rebels Down Southern Miss In Season Opener

OXFORD, Miss. -- The No. 21 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team swept Southern Miss 7-0 here Tuesday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center to begin the 2010 season.
The Rebels captured all three doubles and then gained straight set victories at one, two and three singles to secure the win.
Kristi Boxx was first off the court in singles, downing Vroni van Barelo 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1. Abby Guthrie made it 2-0, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Elja van Barelo at No. 3, and then Karen Nijssen sealed the victory defeating Stephanie Dellocono 6-2, 6-4.
Gabby Rangel topped USM's Zoe Lee 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6, Connor Vogel dominated Laura Gutterman 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and then Laura van de Stroet finished off the sweep, 6-4, 6-0 against Frances Askew at No. 4.
"For our first match, I thought it was pretty good," head coach Mark Beyers said. "There is still some things we need to work on, but that's very normal. For a first match, I am pleased with the overall result. This will definitely help us get ready for this weekend. We talked about where we were 12 months ago, with basically the same team, and we're miles ahead."
Ole Miss will now head to South Carolina for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, where they will face 33rd-ranked Illinois in the first round Saturday at 8 a.m. CT.
