Men's Tennis To Host ITA Kick-Off Weekend

1/27/2010 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss men's tennis team, ranked No. 10 in the nation, will host the second annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend Saturday and Sunday at the Gillom Sports Center. The Kick-Off Weekend serves as the first and second rounds of the ITA National Team Indoor, played at 16 different sites around the nation.

Ole Miss will face Arkansas in the first round Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by Columbia and Indiana at 2 p.m. The winners will play Sunday at 2 p.m. for the right to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Final 16 in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 12-15.

The Rebels hosted the first annual ITA Kick-Off Weekend last year, and a record crowd turned out for the Rebels' two matches against Kentucky and Wake Forest as they advanced to the National Team Indoor Final 16 for the 16th consecutive time.

Head Coach Billy Chadwick would like to see another big crowd come out prior to the men's basketball game against Arkansas.

"We are excited about hosting this prestigious event," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "It's great that we're playing Arkansas in basketball (3 p.m.) as well as in tennis, and we would like to encourage the fans to come cheer on us on prior to the basketball game."

The Rebels (1-0) are coming off an epic comeback win over arch-rival Mississippi State in the annual River Hills Mississippi Cup Monday. Down 3-0, the Rebels rallied behind wins from sophomore Marcel Thiemann, freshmen Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Harry Fowler and the clincher from sophomore Chris Thiemann. Fowler's match at No. 5 singles was the turning point; as he fought off match point in the second set tiebreaker and went on to take the third set.

Arkansas comes into Saturday's match at 0-1. They lost to No. 8 Texas 6-1 in their season opener last Friday.

Admission to this weekend's matches is free.
