OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team will be in Birmingham, Ala., this weekend for the ITA Southern Regionals hosted by Samford University at the Samford Tennis Center.

The tournament begins Friday and concludes Monday with the finals. The Southern Region includes schools from the states of Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The winner of the singles and doubles events earns a spot in the ITA National Indoor in November.

"We had a great showing at this tournament a year ago, and we look forward to going to Birmingham and hopefully equaling that success," head coach Mark Beyers said.

Ole Miss dominated the Southern Regional tournament last year, as Kristi Boxx teamed up with former All-American Karen Nijssen to win the doubles title and was the singles runner-up. In addition, three doubles teams and four singles players reached the quarterfinals, with two in the singles semifinals.

Boxx, a Grenada, Miss., native is the highest ranked player in the region at No. 20 in the nation. She comes into the tournament with a 6-3 record.

Also competing this weekend are seniors Connor Vogel and Laura van de Stroet, juniors Abby Guthrie and Gabby Rangel and freshman Vivian Vlaar. Vlaar owns a 7-2 record this fall.

In doubles, Ole Miss boasts one of the top teams in the region and in the nation, in Boxx and Guthrie, ranked No. 15. The duo is 7-2 this fall.
