EL PASO, Texas - Ole Miss senior All-American Jonathan Randolph didn't finish the way he wanted on Tuesday at the Western Refining All-America Golf Classic, but with a 6-under 207 he still earned a tie for sixth in his first appearance in the prestigious tournament.
Randolph came into the final round just two back of the leader after carding a 65-70--135 in the first two rounds. He birdied the first hole, but then posted eight straight pars along the way to a 1-over 72 at the El Paso Country Club.
"It was a frustrating day today," said the Brandon, Miss., native. I hit the ball really well, but my putter absolutely went flat. I hit 15 greens and only made two birdies. I was playing in the last group, and they didn't play that much better. I just didn't make any putts."
Randolph, the fourth Ole Miss player to compete in the All-America Classic, posted the lowest score and the second best finish by a Rebel. Former All-American Darren Cole finished second behind 1997 PGA Champion Davis Love III in 1984 with a 213.
"It was a great experience. This is a special tournament with an excellent field. We had a nice crowd out there today. It had a really unique feel to it," Randolph added.
The field included seven of the top 11 amateur golfers in the world, according to the R&A World Amateur Golf Rankings. Randolph was among six golfers representing the SEC in the field.
He tied for sixth in the 32-player field, along with fellow SEC member Andrew Loupe of LSU, to lead the conference contingent. Alex Ching of The University of San Diego took home the title with a final round 67 for a 12-under 201.
"It was great to put myself in that position," said Randolph, on being in contention to win it. It definitely shows me what I need to work on and what I am doing well in order to get ready for the spring."
"Jonathan had a great tournament. I know he was close to winning and it was a great experience for him. Our entire team and coaching staff is very proud of him," head coach Ernest Ross said.
Randolph will hit the links again Dec. 17-21 at the Dixie Amateur in Coral Springs, Fla. The Rebels open the spring season Feb. 12-13 at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
