Ole Miss Holds Off Portland State At Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, Ariz. - Corrine Doornberg and Lauren Grill both smashed two-run doubles as part of a five-run second inning as the Ole Miss Rebels (3-2) defeated Portland State 5-3 on the final day of the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by Arizona State.
Right fielder Alyssa McGovern laced a single into right with one down to start the Rebel rally in the second. She moved over to third with two outs after third baseman Cali Overbeck reached on a throwing error by Viking second baseman Becca Diede, which allowed Overbeck to advance to second. Center fielder Alise Doubt then walked to load the bases for the Rebels and lead-off hitter Corrine Doornberg doubled to center to plate two runs and give Ole Miss a 2-0 lead. Left fielder Ashley Dowdy laid down a bunt single down the first base line to score Doubt and shortstop Lauren Grill capped the inning with a two-run double down the left field line to stake the Rebels to a 5-0 advantage.
Portland State cut into the Rebel lead in the sixth on an RBI single from right fielder Brandi Campos. The Viks scored two more runs on a wild pitch by Brittany Barnhill and an RBI single from designated player Lacey Holm in the seventh, but Lindsey Perry entered in relief and got first baseman Alexa Morales to pop up to second with the bases loaded to end the game.
Barnhill earned her first win as a Rebel after pitching 3.0 innings and striking out four. She allowed three runs on six hits. Perry picked up her first save of the season as she pitched the final inning giving up no runs on two hits. Becky Nye started for the Rebels and pitched 3.0 shutout innings allowing no hits, while striking out two.
Next up, Ole Miss will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. for the FAU Tournament hosted by Florida Atlantic beginning on Feb. 19. The Rebels will face Florida Atlantic, Maryland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh during the three-day tournament.
