Ole Miss Earns Split At FAU Kickoff Classic
2/19/2010 | Softball
BOCA RATON, Fla. - Second baseman Corrine Doornberg scored once and drove in a run and junior Brittany Barnhill pitched a complete-game shutout as Ole Miss (4-3) downed Pittsburgh (1-1) 3-0 on day one of the FAU Kickoff Classic. The win earned the Rebels a split on the day as they dropped the first game of the tournament 1-0 to Minnesota.
Barnhill (2-0) went the distance for Ole Miss in her first complete-game shutout for the Rebels. She struck out nine batters and allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings of work. Barnhill faced only four batters over the minimum and retired 17 of the final 19 batters she faced.
Ole Miss broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth after Barnhill laced a single to left and Doornberg, who reached on a bunt single to start the frame, scored from second to give the Rebels a 1-0 advantage.
The Rebels added to their lead in the fifth when Doornberg smashed an RBI double down the left field line to score catcher Rachel Torres. Panther starting pitcher Cory Berliner then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed left fielder Courtnie Ghinaudo to score from third and stake Ole Miss to a 3-0 lead.
Doornberg finished the game two-for-three at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Barnhill added a hit and an RBI in three at-bats.
The Rebels will continue action at the FAU Kickoff Classic tomorrow as they face off against Maryland and Florida Atlantic beginning at 3 p.m.
Game Two
Minnesota shortstop Abby Rehberger scored on shortstop Lauren Grill's throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Golden Gophers (4-4) a 1-0 win over Ole Miss on day one of the FAU Kickoff Classic.
Rehberger started the frame by reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Cali Overbeck and moved to second on a sac bunt. After starting pitcher Becky Nye struck out designated player Tina Watts looking for the second out, center fielder Dannie Skrove hit a single into the six-hole and Grill's errant throw over first base allowed Rehberger to score.
Nye (1-3) took the complete-game loss after allowing one unearned run in 6.2 innings. She struck out five and only gave up three hits.
Lacey Middlebrooks (4-1) picked up the shutout win for Minnesota. She allowed only three hits and struck out nine in 7.0 innings.
Nye retired nine of the first ten batters to start the game. She only allowed a second-inning walk, but that runner was erased on a double play and she faced the minimum through 3.1 innings. Nye walked two batters in the fourth and had runners on first and second with two down, but got first baseman Alex Davis to fly out to right to end the inning.
Minnesota loaded the bases with one out in the fifth on a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but Nye recorded a ground out and got second baseman Sammie Howard to strike out swinging to end the threat.
Ole Miss had runners on the corners with one down in the sixth, but left fielder Ashley Dowdy grounded into a fielder's choice and pinch runner Brittany Broome was gunned down at home for the second out. Grill then grounded into another fielder's choice to end the inning.
