2/25/2010 | Women's Tennis
OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss women's tennis team, ranked No. 26 in the nation, will host Middle Tennessee State Sunday at 1 p.m., at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center, in the first outdoor match of the season.
Ole Miss comes into the match at 4-1 with back-to-back shutouts. In their last action, the Rebels swept Texas Tech 7-0. Sophomore Kristi Boxx remained undefeated (5-0) at No. 1 singles and is ranked No. 30 in the nation. She teams with Karen Nijssen for a 4-1 record at No. 1 doubles and a No. 18 ranking. The middle of the lineup has been impressive for the Rebels as well, with sophomore Abby Guthrie and junior Connor Vogel combining for an 8-2 record at three and four singles.
Middle Tennessee State earned a No. 75 national ranking this week after a 5-0 start this season. They host Marshall on Saturday before coming to Oxford. The Blue Raiders are led by sophomore Carla Nava and senior Natalie Araya, who are a combined 8-2 at the top two spots in the lineup.
"We will know a little more about them (Middle Tennessee) after Saturday because Marshall is a good team," head coach Mark Beyers said. "Obviously they've gotten off to a good start. We've had good practices outside this week despite the cold temperatures. This is a big match for us to go into conference play on a solid note."
Ole Miss is in the middle of a five-match homestand. Following the match against MTSU, the Rebels will begin SEC play at home against Vanderbilt and Kentucky next weekend.
Admission to all home matches is free.
