Pomeranz Named SEC Pitcher Of The Week

3/1/2010 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Drew Pomeranz has been named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced on Monday when it released its weekly honors.

It is the first SEC Pitcher of the Week honor for Pomeranz and second weekly honor for the southpaw who was named a Freshman of the Week selection in the 2008 season. The left-handed hurler claimed honors that week after pitching a shutout of then sixth-ranked Vanderbilt.

This past weekend, Pomeranz was dominant on the mound for the Rebels as he led Ole Miss to a series-opening win over Oakland. In the game, he struck out a season-high 15 batters - finishing a strikeout shy of tying his career-high and tying the school record for strikeouts in a single-game.

Pomeranz struck out 16 batters last season in a win over Western Kentucky to clinch the NCAA Oxford Regional Championship and advance to the NCAA Super Regionals.

In the win over Oakland, Pomeranz allowed only one run on a solo home run and gave up only four hits. He held the Golden Grizzlies to a .160 batting average against. He also retired 10 of the last 11 batters faced - eight of them by strikeout.

Ole Miss will return to action on Tuesday when the Rebels host Memphis at 6:30 p.m. at Oxford-University Stadium/Swayze Field.
