Connor Vogel Named SEC Player of the Week

3/10/2010 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior Connor Vogel of the now No. 22 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team was named the SEC Player of the Week Wednesday. She and her teammates will try to extend their five-match win streak this weekend as they battle Arkansas and LSU on the road.

Ole Miss earned its first 2-0 conference start since the 2000 season and its first win against Vanderbilt since 1999. First up this weekend, the Rebels will do battle against No. 17 Arkansas on Friday at 12 p.m.

"We're excited about being 2-0 in the SEC. Hopefully we can be 4-0 heading into spring break, so we can get a little rest and be ready for that last run," head coach Mark Beyers said.

"Arkansas has a good team, and we have a good team. I talked about how last week against Vanderbilt it would probably be 4-3 either way. We can expect that same type match against Arkansas."

Arkansas enters the weekend at 10-4 overall and 0-2 in the SEC. They lost to a pair of Top 25 teams last weekend at Florida and South Carolina.

On Sunday, the Rebels will travel to Baton Rouge to face the LSU Tigers, who also went 0-2 in league play last weekend. They are 2-8 overall.

Sophomore Kristi Boxx, ranked No. 36 in the nation, leads Ole Miss with a 5-1 record at No. 1 singles. She also teams with Karen Nijssen for a 6-1 record at No. 1 doubles and a No. 12 ranking.

Boxx has plenty of help up and down the lineup. The rest of the lineup has combined for a 31-8 record in singles. The other two doubles' teams are 13-3 combined.

Vogel, a native of Germantown, Tenn., went 3-1 in singles and doubles and clinched the win over Kentucky. With Boxx out of the singles lineup, Vogel moved up a spot to No. 2 and won 6-0, 6-0 to clinch. Vogel talked about the 2-0 start and the upcoming road trip.

"It's awesome to be 2-0 in the SEC. We feel like we're definitely contenders for the SEC West," Vogel said. "Arkansas is a really good team. They're solid from 1-6. We're going to have to be prepared. They lost last weekend, so they'll be ready to play."

Both matches will feature live scoring, which can be accessed at www.OleMissSports.com.
