3/12/2010 | Women's Tennis

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The No. 22 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team won the doubles point against No. 17 Arkansas, but couldn't carry the momentum into singles, dropping a 5-2 decision Friday at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Rebels fall to 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, while Arkansas improved to 11-4 and 1-2. The Rebels will travel to LSU on Sunday for a Noon match.

Ole Miss swept the doubles to take the early 1-0 lead. Abby Guthrie and Laura van de Stroet won 8-5 at No. 3, and then the 12th-ranked duo of Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen won 8-3 at No. 1 to clinch the point and improve to 7-1.

The Rebels increased their lead to 2-0, as Nijssen downed Kate Lukomskaya 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Arkansas answered as No. 54 ranked Anouk Tigu upset No. 36 ranked Kristi Boxx in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

Arkansas freshman Claudine Paulson evened the match score with her victory over Rebel sophomore Gabby Rangel, 7-6(7), 6-0. The Rebels then fell behind 3-2 when junior Laura van de Stroet lost to Razorback freshman Kelsey Sundaram 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. It marked van de Stroet's first dual match of the season.

With two matches (3 and 4) still in play the final decision was yet to be decided as both courts split sets.

After dropping the first set 7-5, Abby Guthrie was able to split sets (7-5) with Stephanie Roy, but Roy ended up taking the third set 6-0 to clinch the match.

LSU defeated Mississippi State 6-1 on Friday. To follow live stats during the match, go to www.OleMissSports.com and click on the link in the Rebel Hub.
