Ole Miss Drops Series Finale To Bulldogs

3/21/2010 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss pounded out 10 hits led by sophomore Corrine Doornberg's 3-for-4 performance at the plate, but it wasn't enough as the Rebels dropped the series finale to Mississippi Sate 11-5 on Sunday at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. Ole Miss (18-13, 5-5 SEC) took both games of yesterday's double-header to earn its first series win over the Bulldogs since 2006.

Doornberg started the Ole Miss first with a lead-off triple to left center and scored with one out on Lauren Grill's single to center to put Ole Miss up 1-0 after one.

MSU loaded the bases with one out in the third on three walks by Ole Miss starting pitcher Lindsey Perry. Becky Nye then entered in relief of Perry and got Jessie Bailey to ground into a fielder's choice, but first baseman Courtney Nesbit hit a line-drive grand slam to left to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

The Rebels tied the game with three runs of their own in the third. First baseman Brittany Barnhill knocked a two-run single to pull Ole Miss to with a run and catcher Amber Tramp's RBI-single to right tied the game at four.

The Bulldogs retook the lead in the fourth after catcher Chelsea Bramlett singled to lead off the inning, stole second and later scored on a Brittany Bell RBI ground out.

Ole Miss loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the fourth on a pair of singles by Doornberg and Ashley Dowdy and an intentional walk issued to Lauren Grill, but MSU starting pitcher Kylie Vry got Barnhill to ground out to third to end the Rebel scoring threat.

Doornberg finished the game with three hits and two runs scored in four at-bats, while Barnhill, Dowdy and Tramp each added two hits apiece.

Bulldog shortstop Erin Nesbit's two-run triple in the fifth extended the MSU lead to 7-4 and Bramlett knocked an RBI single later in the frame to give the Bulldogs an 8-4 advantage.

Tramp led off the Ole Miss fifth with a double off the wall in left center and was pinch ran for by Brittany Broome, who moved to third on a ground out and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 8-5 after five innings.

MSU expanded its lead with three more runs in the seventh highlighted by a pair of RBI single from Bramlett and center fielder Brittany Bell.

Kelly Chandler took the loss for the Rebels after allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits in 2.0 innings of work. Perry gave up six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of total work. Nye pitched 0.2 of an inning and allowed one run on three hits.

Next up, Ole Miss will travel to the Volunteer State for a single game against Middle Tennessee on Thursday, followed by a three-game series against the Tennessee Lady Vols in Knoxville. The Rebels and the Vols will play a double-header on Saturday beginning at noon and will conclude the series on Sunday at noon.
