3/21/2010 | Men's Tennis
COLUMBIA, S.C. - It was the freshmen who came up big for the No. 14 nationally ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team Sunday, as all three won in singles to propel the Rebels to a 5-2 win over South Carolina at the USC Field House.
With the win, the Rebels improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the SEC. They return to the courts Sunday, March 28 to host Florida at 1 p.m.
"We are proud of the team. Anytime you get a win in the SEC on the road, it's a great win," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We had to work hard to get it. We started at 1:15 indoors only playing on four courts, and finished at 6:30 p.m. (ET). It was tough, but the guys did a great job."
The day began with the Rebels taking the doubles point for the 11th time this year. Chris and Marcel Thiemann continued to dominate at No. 2 doubles, taking out Ivan Machado and Johannes Pulsfort 8-2 to improve to 11-3 at No. 2 and 4-1 in the SEC. The freshman duo of Adrian Forberg Skogeng and Harry Fowler clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Alexander Kostanov and Ivan Cressoni at No. 3.
Freshman Jonas Lutjen put the Rebels up 2-0 as he beat Kostanov 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
South Carolina got on the board, when 73rd-ranked Diego Cubas beat 60th-ranked Tucker Vorster 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Ole Miss answered, with sophomore Chris Thiemann topping Cressoni 6-3, 7-5 at No. 4 singles to increase the Rebels' lead to 3-1 and move to 13-1 overall and 4-1 in the SEC.
The Gamecocks answered when Pedro Campos finished off Rebel Marcel Thiemann in three sets. Thiemann won the first set 7-5, but Campos rallied to take the second and third sets 7-5, 6-4 to put his team within one as the remaining matches were getting tight.
Fowler answered the bell against USC's Pulsfort, pulling out a three-setter at No. 6 to clinch his second win for the Rebels this season. The Houston, Texas native, won the first set 7-5, but Pulsfort rallied to take the second 6-1. Fowler held him off in the third 7-5 to seal Ole Miss' seventh straight against the Gamecocks.
Soon after, his doubles partner Forberg Skogeng, finished off a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Machado at No. 5 for the final point.
