Pomeranz Named SEC Pitcher Of The Week

3/22/2010 | Baseball

OXFORD, Miss. - Junior left-hander Drew Pomeranz was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week for his shutout victory over No. 20 Kentucky, the conference office announced on Monday.

Pomeranz picked up his third win of the season on Friday night as he shutout the Wildcats for 6.0 innings and held the Kentucky offense to only one hit in his time on the mound. Pomeranz walked two batters but no base runners advanced past second base in his time on the mound.

The junior southpaw fanned nine batters in the outing and combined with reliever Eric Callender to post a 9-0 shutout of the Wildcats to pick up the first win of the series. It helped propel Ole Miss to the series win, the program's first at Kentucky since the 2002 season when Ole Miss posted a sweep of the Wildcats.

The shutout stretched the Rebels' streak of scoreless innings pitched against the Wildcats to 18.0 innings of shutout ball dating back to the series finale in 2009 and a stretch of 24.0 innings without giving up an earned run to Kentucky.

It is the second time Pomeranz has picked up Pitcher of the Week honors from the Southeastern Conference this season. The junior was also named Pitcher of the Week after he fanned a season-high 15 batters against Oakland on February 26 in a Rebel victory.
