Ole Miss Drops A Pair At No. 17 Tennessee

3/27/2010 | Softball

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior shortstop Lauren Grill picked up two hits and two RBI on the day, but No. 17 Tennessee took both games of a double header from Ole Miss on Saturday. The Lady Vols knocked off Ole Miss 4-2 in the first game and the Rebels fell 6-3 in game two.

Ole Miss (18-15, 5-7 SEC) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first of game one on a two-run single through the right side of the infield by Grill that scored second baseman Corrine Doornberg and center fielder Alise Doubt. Doornberg walked to lead off the game and Doubt had reached on a throwing error on a sac bunt to set up Grill's single.

Tennessee tied the game at two in the first after catcher Tiffany Huff hit a bases-loaded ground ball back to Ole Miss starting pitcher Becky Nye, who went home for the first out. However, Rebel catcher Amber Tramp's throw to first for the double play went over first baseman Brittany Barnhill's head and allowed two runs to score. Huff scored later in the inning after Lauren Gibson reached on a fielding error by Barnhill to give the Lady Vols the 3-2 lead after one.

Both teams held each other in check until the bottom of the fifth when Tennessee third baseman Jessica Spigner singled up the middle to drive-in Kat Dotson and give the Lady Vols a 4-2 advantage. Tennessee loaded the bases with one out later in the fifth, buy Nye got designated player Nicole Kajitani to ground into a double play to end the threat.

Nye (5-7) took the complete-game loss for Ole Miss allowing four runs, only one earned, in 6.0 innings of work. She struck out four and walked three batters.

Ole Miss and Tennessee will conclude its three-game series tomorrow at noon at Lee Softball Stadium.

Game Two

Brittany Barnhill pitched 5.1 innings and smashed a solo home run, but it wasn't enough as No.17-nationally ranked Tennessee won the second game of a double header 6-3 over Ole Miss.

Tennessee jumped on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first after Kat Dotson scored on catcher Tiffany Huff's single up the middle. Dotson, who was on second after a single and a stolen base, stopped at third, but second baseman Corrine Doornberg's arrant throw got by catcher Rachel Torres allowing Dotson to score and give Tennessee a 1-0 lead.

Ole Miss tied the game in the fourth when catcher Amber Tramp doubled to right center to lead off the inning and was pinch run for by Brittany Broome. Right fielder Alyssa McGovern then laid down a sac bunt which UT catcher Tiffany Huff picked up and threw into right field allowing Broome to score and McGovern to reach at second. A Cali Overbeck grounder moved McGovern to third before Aly Presswood struck out for the second out. After pinch hitter Kelly Nolan reached on a hit by pitch, Doornberg poked a single into left to score McGovern and give the Rebels a 2-1 lead.

Doornberg finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, while McGovern added a hit and a run scored in two at-bats.

The Lady Vols loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth on a single and a pair of walk by Ole Miss starting pitcher Brittany Barnhill, but Barnhill struck out UT shortstop Ashley Andrews swinging to end the scoring threat.

Barnhill extended the Rebel lead with one out in the fifth with a long solo home run to left. It was her third homer of the season and gave Ole Miss a 3-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth , Dotson hit a sac fly that pulled Tennessee within a run for the second out and Huff knocked a fly ball to straight away center that would have been the third out of the inning, but center fielder Alise Doubt dropped the fly ball and allowed Raven Chavanne to score and tie the game at three.

Tennessee took the lead in the sixth after Barnhill walked in a run with the bases loaded. Lindsey Perry, who entered the game in relief of Barnhill, then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed another run to come home and issued another bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 6-3.

Barnhill (8-4) allowed six run on six hits, four of which were earned, in the loss. She struck out five and issued eight walks.
