Spring Practice Report 03.28
3/29/2010 | Football
The Rebels worked out for two hours in helmets and shorts in the final non-contact practice before putting out the pads Monday.
"I really like our team," said Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt. "We have a lot of learning to do. We had 19 drops yesterday, and today we had two. That's a huge improvement. There was better concentration."
The Rebels return a defensive front seven that is heavy on seniors with tackles Jerrell Powe, Lawon Scott, Ted Laurent and LaMark Armour, end Kentrell Lockett and linebackers Jonathan Cornell and Allen Walker. Nutt continued to praise their work and desire to improve.
"You have to be physical and practice hard to get better in this league," Nutt said. "They know we're putting a lot of responsibility on them for our team, as far as leadership and controlling the line of scrimmage. Whether a team comes in with the run or the pass, they have to be the dominant force for us to help our young secondary."
Nutt has also liked what he has seen from junior college transfer Wayne Dorsey at defensive end.
"He shows up," Nutt said. "I'm anxious to see how he translates that in pads. In gym shorts, he looks real good. He is very quick. He had two sacks in team situation, two-minute drill."
Offensively, Nutt noted that receivers Melvin Harris and Ja-Mes Logan "have caught our eye" and quarterback Nathan Stanley made progress today.
"He had been sick over the last part of the (spring) break. He came back today and threw the ball much better," Nutt said.
The first contact practice of Ole Miss' spring drills will be Monday at 4 p.m. Practices are open to the public, but fans are asked to remain in the designated area, outside the red line, and are not allowed between the practice fields. Use of cellular phones and cameras are prohibited for fans at practice.
Practice times and locations will be updated daily on OleMissSports.com and twitter.com/OleMissNow.
