Rebel Netters Defeat Vanderbilt 6-1

3/6/2010 | Men's Tennis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team earned a hard fought 6-1 win over 30th-ranked Vanderbilt Friday at the Currey Tennis Center to begin SEC play.

The Rebels improved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. They travel to Lexington, Ky., for a Noon match against the eighth-ranked Wildcats on Sunday.

Ole Miss won the doubles point for the seventh consecutive match to take the early 1-0 lead. After Vanderbilt claimed the No. 3 match, the Rebels posted victories at two and then the clincher at one.

The Rebels quickly gained a 3-0 lead when junior Tucker Vorster downed Commodore Bryant Salcedo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Chris Thiemann followed up with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Adam Baker at No. 5 singles. Thiemann is now 9-0 in dual matches.

The Commodores finally got on the board when Vijay Paul rallied to beat freshman Jonas Lutjen 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot.

With Vanderbilt having won the first set on courts one and six, the Rebels needed a final push to grab the victory, and they got it from freshman Adrian Forberg Skogeng. The Norway native took care of business in the second tiebreaker to post a 7-5, 7-6(4) win and clinch the Rebels' sixth consecutive victory against Vanderbilt.

"It's always good to start off SEC play with a win," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We had to battle, but we came through at the end. Tucker played great, as did Chris to put us up, and then Adrian did a great job winning the second set tiebreaker to clinch it. Sunday will be a very tough match for us, but we are looking forward to it."

The Rebels will be going for their 11th straight win against Kentucky. Fans can follow the match by going to www.OleMissSports.com and clicking on the live stats link in the Rebel Hub.
