Rebel Netters Suffer First SEC Loss In Two Years

3/7/2010 | Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The No. 15 nationally ranked Ole Miss men's tennis team saw its 23-match win streak in the SEC come to an end as No. 8 Kentucky defeated the Rebels 5-2 here Sunday at the Boone Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Rebels dropped to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the SEC.

It marked Ole Miss' first loss in league play since March 21, 2008. Since that time, the Rebels had won 23 consecutive SEC matches, including back-to-back tournament titles and an undefeated mark to win the overall SEC Championship last year.

The loss also snapped a 10-match win streak against the Wildcats, who gained the upper hand by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions.

The Rebels fell behind 2-0 when freshman Jaime Vazquez Catoira lost to UK's Graeme Dyce 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Junior Tucker Vorster, ranked No. 53 in the nation, put the Rebels on the board by upsetting 37th-ranked Alex Musialek 6-3, 6-2.

Kentucky clinched the victory, claiming wins on courts one and five. Marcel Thiemann dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision to eighth-ranked Eric Quigley at one, and then his brother, Chris, lost his first dual match, 6-1, 6-3, to Wildcat Alberto Gonzalez.

"We didn't play as well as we have been playing," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "They played really well at every position. There were a couple of key points in every match, and we didn't get them. We weren't as sharp as we had been in doubles. We just didn't have an answer for them."

The Rebels will try to rebound when they host a pair of SEC matches this weekend. First up is a re-match against Arkansas, whom Ole Miss defeated 4-3 in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor back in January.
