Rebels Fall To No. 12 Georgia

4/10/2010 | Softball

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss took a 4-0 lead over No. 12 Georgia, but the Bulldogs answered back scoring five runs in the seventh inning to win game one of a double header 9-5 over the Rebels on Saturday. The Bulldogs also took the second game of the day 6-0.

The Rebels (21-17, 5-9 SEC)started the third with three straight singles from Courtnie Ghinaudo, Corrine Doornberg and Alise Doubt to load the bases. Shortstop Lauren Grill then smashed a single through the right side of the infield to drive-in Ghinaudo for the Rebels' first run and designated player Brittany Barnhill then hit a sac fly to right that scored Doornberg and gave Ole Miss a 2-0 lead. A pair of RBI sac bunts from Amber Tramp and Cali Overbeck extended the Rebel advantage to 4-0.

Doornberg tied a career high with three singles, while Grill finished the game 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. The run scored for Grill broke a tied with DeDe Justice for the Ole Miss all-time runs mark. It was her 125th career run scored.

Georgia answered back in the fourth with a two-run homer from first baseman Brianna Hesson that cut the Ole Miss lead to 4-2. Hesson tied the game at four in the sixth with a two-out, two-run single to right.

The Rebels threatened in the bottom of the sixth with three straight two-out singles to load the bases, but Barnhill popped out to second to strand all three runners.

Georgia broke the game open in the seventh with five runs in the seventh highlighted by a two-run single by Hesson that gave the Bulldogs a 9-4 lead.

Cali Overbeck delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh that cut the UGA lead to 9-5, but that was all the runs the Rebels could muster.

The Rebels and the Bulldogs will continue the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
