Hashman Homer Helps Rebels Top Georgia In 13 Innings

4/11/2010 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. - Taylor Hashman hit a two-run home run to spark a Rebel rally in the 13th inning and Kevin Mort added the insurance run as No. 15 Ole Miss (23-9, 7-4 SEC) defeated Georgia (10-21, 2-9 SEC) by a score of 4-3 to claim the weekend series.

Eric Callender (2-1) picked up the win in relief as he turned in 1.2 innings of work and allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Trent Rothlin picked up his first save of the season as he worked the final 1.0 innings holding the Bulldogs hitless and striking out one.

Reliever Chase Hawkins (0-3) took the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits with a walk in 1.0 inning of work as he entered the game to start the 13th inning.

Rebel starter Aaron Barrett pitched a career-long 7.1 innings and struck out a career-high 10 batters in the start for his eighth quality start of the season, but took no decision as Georgia rallied to tie the game in the ninth and send things into extra innings.

"I'm really proud of the way we competed throughout the game," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "Walters was tough for them and matched Aaron Barrett pitch for pitch. I'm really proud of the way we continued to battle out there.

"We pitched well and defended well. Again today we barreled balls up as the game continued, but you have to tip your hat to Georgia because they made the plays. [Taylor] Hashman's home run was big to break through for us and help us get the win."

Ole Miss got on the board first, putting two men on in the sixth before Taylor Hightower came up with an RBI single to right with two outs to score Zach Miller. Miller walked before taking second on a single to left from Mike Snyder to get into scoring position for the Hightower hit that put the Rebels up 1-0.

Georgia sparked a rally in the bottom of the eighth when Kyle Farmer hit a one out double to left field. A walk of Colby May put two men on as the top of the order came to the plate with Jonathan Taylor and Ole Miss went to the bullpen for Brett Huber. Huber worked to a 1-2 count, but hit Taylor with a pitch to load the bases. The freshman right-hander then got Peter Verdin to foul out to first and Levi Hyams to line out to center field to end the inning and keep the Rebels on top 1-0.

Zach Cone opened the ninth inning with a solo shot to left center to tie the game at one. Huber then kept the Bulldogs from doing any more damage with a strikeout and two fly outs to send the game into extra innings.

After a lead-off single in the 13th from Ferguson, Hashman hit his third home run of the season off the batter's eye to give Ole Miss a 3-1 lead on the Bulldogs. Ole Miss added a third run when Kevin Mort came up with an RBI double to right field to score Matt Smith from third, but Alex Yarbrough was thrown out at home trying to score to end the inning with the Rebels up 4-1.

Georgia responded, using a single and a double from the first two batters to push a run across and cut the lead in half to 4-2. A single to left center from Cone pushed a second run across and cut the Rebels' lead to one with no outs. Rothlin held the Bulldogs off from there, getting Georgia to ground out, strikeout and ground out to end the game.

Ole Miss and Georgia will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. CDT at Foley Field on Sunday.
