Rebels Playing For SEC Tournament 1st Round Bye

4/15/2010 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. - The No. 17 nationally ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team heads to Starkville, Miss., for the final regular season match against Mississippi State with still something to play for in the SEC.

If the Rebels (13-4, 7-3) win Saturday's match (11 a.m.) they can clinch a bye in the first round of the SEC Tournament for the first time since 2000. In addition, a win would give the Rebels their best SEC record (8-3) since 2000.

"We're excited to win the SEC West. Doing it on the road wasn't easy. Auburn and Alabama made us work for it, but we're used to that in this league," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We've had two great weekends, winning at home against Tennessee and Georgia and then on the road against Auburn and Alabama. To win anything in this league is tough, and we are very proud of the girls. But, we're looking for bigger and better things.

"If we take care of business this weekend, we can earn either the No. 2 or 3 seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament, so it's a big match for us."

Mississippi State lost a pair of 6-1 matches to Alabama and Auburn last weekend. With the losses, MSU has now dropped seven straight in conference action after ousting Kentucky in the first SEC contest of the year.

Just like the Rebel men, the women boast a streak of their own against Mississippi State. The women have won 20 consecutive against the Bulldogs, including last year's 4-0 shutout in Oxford.
