Spring Practice Report 04.15
4/15/2010 | Football
OXFORD, Miss. - On Thursday, the Ole Miss football team held its final full contact practice before Saturday's Cellular South Grove Bowl.
"We have had a really good spring and the guys have done an excellent job of listening and learning," Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said. "Tomorrow will be a good day because we are planning on doing a lot of drills and finish up with our two minute drills and our kicking drills."
Nutt praised the development of the offensive line and continued to express his excitement about the improvements since the beginning of spring practice.
"Bradley Sowell has really been our leader up front as that left tackle and everybody down the line has gotten better - Rishaw Johnson, Alex Washington, Emmanuel McCray, Evan Swindall, A.J. Hawkins, Bobby Massie," Nutt said. "I know we have a long way to go, but I just like where we are because it's better than where I thought we would be."
Nutt went on to rave about the running backs and the strides that have been made over the last several practices.
"The last five days, especially the last two practices, Enrique Davis has really looked good by hitting the hole and being physical," Nutt said. "Derrick Herman and Korvic Neat are very quick and are getting a better feel for their blocking schemes and they are starting to see it with their eyes now."
Nutt also acknowledged that the secondary is a lot further along that he originally anticipated.
"I think the secondary is better than I thought and I think they are going to be alright," Nutt said. "Johnny Brown is leading us back there and Damien Jackson is an excellent addition, and Fon Ingram gives us a little experience.
"The corners are a little bit better, but we have a ways to go. I feel good about Marcus Temple and Charles Sawyer and, of course, Jeremy McGee has been playing with a broken hand all spring."
The kicking game is an area that Nutt feels like needs some improvement.
"They have to get better because we have to be able to put three points on the board when we get inside the 30-yard line, and right now it's not been very consistent," Nutt said.
Nutt also mentioned some of the things he will be looking for out of sophomore quarterback Nathan Stanley during Saturday's game.
"I just want to see him be very accurate and make good decisions," Nutt said. "The main thing is to keep building on the good spring he has had, get better and to do it in front of people."
Kickoff for the Cellular South Grove Bowl is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Other events surrounding the weekend include the Grove Stage program with Dexter McCluster at 11 a.m.
