Rebels Fall To No. 5 South Carolina In Series Opener
4/17/2010 | Baseball
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Rebels managed only four hits and left seven men stranded as No. 14 Ole Miss (23-12, 7-6 SEC) fell to No. 5 South Carolina (28-6, 10-3 SEC) by a score of 5-0 on Friday night at Carolina Stadium.
It marks the first time the Rebels have been shut out since the 2008 season when Ole Miss fell to then 12th-ranked Missouri at the NCAA Regional in Coral Gables on May 30, 2008.
Trent Rothlin (3-4) suffered the loss in relief as he walked the first batter faced in the eighth before being pulled from the game. The batter went on to score as part of a five-run inning for the Gamecocks as Ole Miss suffered the loss.
Starter Drew Pomeranz worked 7.0 innings and held the Gamecocks to two hits while striking out 10 and walking four in what was a pitcher's duel early.
Blake Cooper (7-0) picked up the win for South Carolina as he tossed a complete game and held the Rebels to four hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts on the night.
"South Carolina was able to get the big hit and the timely hit tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "It's disappointing to have your ace go out and put up that many zeros and not come away with more. We had the bases loaded and didn't come up with the hit. In a game like the one played tonight, you have to do that."
The Rebels threatened early, loading the bases in the first, but a strikeout ended the threat without any damage done by Ole Miss.
Ole Miss would use back-to-back errors to open the sixth to put two men on with one out before an interference call at second on a grounder to the right side resulted in Matt Smith and Zach Miller being called out on the play to end the Rebels' scoring threat for a second time.
Ole Miss and South Carolina will play the second game of the series at 2 p.m. CDT on Saturday in a game televised by SportSouth.

South Carolina broke the stalemate in the eighth inning as the Rebels went to the bullpen for Rothlin to open the inning. After a walk to the first batter and a ball to the second, Ole Miss again went to the bullpen for Brett Huber. Huber walked Whit Merrifield, the Gamecocks' leadoff hitter, to put two men on with no outs.
James Bradley Jr. then lay down a sac bunt attempt down the third base line. The throw from third was off the mark, however, allowing Bradley Jr. to reach on the throwing error and allowing the lead runner to score while Merrifield took third and South Carolina claimed a 1-0 lead. A wild pitch allowed Bradley to take second and left two men in scoring position.
Ole Miss and South Carolina will play the second game of the series at 2 p.m. CDT on Saturday in a game televised by SportSouth.
