Rebels Drop Series Finale To No. 5 Alabama

4/18/2010 | Softball

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Ole Miss pitchers held the No. 5 Alabama Crimson Tide to only two hits and three runs, but the Tide scrapped together just enough to knock off the Rebels 3-1 in the series finale on Sunday at the Alabama Softball Complex.

Ole Miss starting pitcher Brittany (9-6) allowed just two runs on two hits and struck out six in 5.2 innings of work. She held the Tide hitless for the first 3.1 innings of the game. Junior Lindsey Perry relieved Barnhill for three batters and recorded one out and allowed one run in the fifth. Barnhill then reentered and pitched the final 1.1 innings.

Alabama put runners on first and second with one down in the second on a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but Barnhill got Alabama third baseman Alex Blewitt to line into a double play at second to end the inning.

Barnhill walked the first two batters of the third, but got a strike'em-out, throw'em-out double play for the first two outs of the frame and then struck out reigning SEC Player of the Year Charlotte Morgan looking to end the threat.

The Rebels (23-1, 5-13 SEC) put runners on first and second with one out in the fourth courtesy of a pair of walks by Alabama starting pitcher Kelsi Dunne, but Barnhill and catcher Amber Tramp both struck out to strand the runners.

Ole Miss took the first lead of the game in the top of fifth. Right fielder Alyssa McGovern knocked a bloop single into right to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Cali Overbeck sac bunt. After Aly Presswood fouled out to left, left fielder Ashley Dowdy smashed a single to center that sent McGovern racing home for the first run of the game.

Alabama grabbed the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs, all with two outs. Relief pitcher Lindsey Perry hit Charolette Morgan with the bases loaded to drive in the first run and Barnhill, who reentered to pitch, issued a walk to Cassie Reilly-Boccia to score the second run. Tide shortstop Whitney Larsen then reached on an infield single to short to give Alabama a 3-1 lead after five.

Ole Miss will return home next weekend to host SEC-West rival Auburn for a three-game series at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. The Rebels and the Tigers will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 4 p.m. The first game of the day on Saturday will be televised nationally by ESPNU. Sunday's series finale will be televised by Fox Sports South at 1 p.m. Sunday is also "Kids Take Over The Ballpark Day" at the Ole Miss Softball Complex. Children aged 5-12 will perform a variety of jobs during the game and donations will be accepted in support of Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis.
