Jonathan Randolph Named To Palmer Cup Team

4/21/2010 | Men's Golf

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss junior Jonathan Randolph has been selected to represent the United States in the 2010 Palmer Cup, which will be contested at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland on June 24-26.

The collegiate equivalent of the Ryder Cup has been played annually since 1997, and the U.S. and Europe are tied 6-6-1.

"Jonathan is certainly deserving of this honor," head coach Ernest Ross said. "He has had a phenomenal year and is re-writing all of our Ole Miss records. We are very proud of him."

Ranked No. 6 in Golfstat, Randolph owns three wins this year and seven top five finishes in 11 tournaments. In fact this spring, he has two firsts, a second and two third place performances.

Most recently, Randolph posted three rounds in the 60s at the SEC Tournament to take third and lead the Rebels to a second place finish. Randolph's third place finish at the SECs is the best by a Rebel since 1996.

A candidate for SEC Player of the Year, Randolph is tied with former All-American Jordan Dempsey for third in top five finishes in a season. He has 12 rounds in the 60s and 25 rounds at or under par this year. Randolph is also on par to break the record for lowest stroke average in a season, currently at an SEC-leading 70.52.

"It's really exciting to be named to the Palmer Cup Team," Randolph said. "Being able to represent your country is a great honor, especially along side the top players in the country. It's gratifying to know that all the hard work I put into my game is paying off."

Joining Randolph on the U.S. Team will be Tyson Alexander (Florida), Russell Henley (Georgia), John Chin (UC Irvine), David Chung (Stanford), Dustin Garza (Wichita State), Daniel Miernicki (Oregon) and Corey Nagy (Charlotte).

The U.S. squad will be lead by head coach Chris Zambri of Southern California and assistant coach Brian Sharp of Virginia Tech. Although the United States team does not have a returning player, Alexander's father Buddy coached the U.S. squad to victory at Whistling Straits in 2005.
