Lee Wins Long Jump on Day Four Of Drake Relays

4/23/2010 | Track and Field

DES MOINES, Iowa - Sophomore jumper Caleb Lee became the first male in school history to win the long jump at the Drake Relays when he accomplished the feat Friday from Drake Stadium.

Lee turned in a distance of 24-11.00 in the long jump and defeated his closest competition by over six inches.

It was the third title of the weekend for Ole Miss as brothers Martin and Barnabas Kirui both won distance individual titles Thursday.

Martin Kirui won the 3000 meter steeplechase after posting the second-fastest time in school history with a mark of 8:46.68. His victory marks the third time in the last four years that an Ole Miss runner has captured the individual title in the event, as Barnabas Kirui won the race in both 2007 and 2008.

Barnabas Kirui matched the success of his brother by winning the individual title in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:14.49. He joins former Ole Miss All-American Brittney Reese as the only two Rebels in school history to win three individual titles at the Drake Relays. Reese won the high jump and the long jump twice during her two years in Oxford.

Friday's competition also saw freshman sprinter Mike Granger win the 100 meter prelims and qualify for the finals with a time of 10.45.

Senior Karl Kosman placed eighth in the pole vault with a height of 16-04.75 to record the fifth-highest mark in school history. Fellow senior Colin Moleton finished in sixth place in the javelin throw with a distance of 198-05.00, while Bryce Willen took 10th with a mark of 189-03.00.

On the women's side, junior sprinter LaJada Baldwin won the 100 meter prelims with a time of 11.67 to qualify for the finals. Baldwin also ran the third leg for the 4x400 meter relay team that won the preliminaries and qualified for the finals with a time of 3:36.57 to mark the fourth-fastest time in school history.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Lor'Rena De'Jurnett, Kristin Bridges, Jasmine Williams and Baldwin took seventh in the preliminaries and reached the finals with a time of 46.03. The 4x200 meter relay team of Lauren Hollingsworth, Sofia Hellberg-Jonsen, Jasmine Dacus and Williams turned in a sixth place finish with a time of 1:37.35.

In field events, freshman Neal Tisher placed seventh in the pole vault with a height of 12-07.50.
