Women's Tennis Knocks Off No. 14 Tennessee

4/3/2010 | Women's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. -- Junior Connor Vogel clinched the doubles point and won in singles to help lead the Ole Miss women's tennis to a 5-2 win over her former team, No. 14 Tennessee, Friday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

With the win, the Rebels improved to 10-4 overall and 4-3 in the SEC. Ole Miss still maintains a one match lead over Arkansas in the SEC West. Tennessee dropped to 11-6 overall and 5-2 in league play.

"This is a great win," head coach Mark Beyers said. "They're No. 14 in the country, and you have the whole scenario of Connor transferring from there. I think the girls kind of took that to heart and wanted to win for Connor. This puts us in the driver's seat in the SEC West."

The Rebels got on the board first, by taking the doubles point with wins on courts three and two. Vogel and Gabby Rangel clinched the point by defeating Rosalia Alda and Zsofia Zubor 8-5 on court two.

Laura van de Stroet made it 2-0 Ole Miss with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jennifer Meredith at No. 5 singles, improving to 5-2 in the SEC.

Tennessee got its first of two points at No. 1 singles, as Caitlin Whoriskey defeated Rebel Kristi Boxx 6-3, 6-2.

Moments later, Vogel put the Rebels ahead for good, 3-1, as she topped her former teammate, Alda, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Vogel is now 11-2 in dual matches and 6-1 in the SEC.

"It's really exciting, this is the best win we've had all year," Vogel said. "We keep falling in the rankings, but we're definitely a top team. I think we proved that today. We didn't have anything to lose out there today, and everyone came out and gave it their all."

Sophomore Abby Guthrie clinched the team's first win against Tennessee since 2006, when she finished off Lady Vol Zsofia Zubor 6-3,6-3 on court four.

"It's really big," Guthrie said. "If there was one team in the SEC we felt confident we could beat when the season started, it was Tennessee. We definitely showed that today."
