Rebel Track And Field Set To Host Ole Miss Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss track and field team will host its first of two home meets this season when the Rebels take part in the Ole Miss Invitational Saturday from the Ole Miss Track and Field Complex.

Competition begins at 11:30 a.m. with the men's hammer throw and the women's javelin throw. Admission to this year's Ole Miss Invitational will be free of charge.

Several teams from around the region are expected to compete this weekend, including Alabama, Alcorn State, Arkansas State, Jackson State, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Mississippi State and Samford.

"We are really excited that our fans will have the opportunity to come out and watch two of the top teams in the nation," head coach Joe Walker said. "We have several of the top athletes in the country and we believe that spectators will see some great track and field this weekend."

Individually, the Rebels feature some of the top talent in the nation and all are expected to be in action Saturday. The men's team enters the weekend 17th in the nation in the latest U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association poll and feature 10 athletes ranked amongst the top-30 in the nation.

Freshman jumper Ricky Robertson ranks first in the country in the high jump after setting a new school record last weekend with a height of 7-05.75 at the Florida Relays. Sophomore Brian Knight is second in the NCAA in the high jump with a top height of 7-04.50 turned in last weekend at the Florida Relays. Knight is also 29th in the nation in the triple jump with a distance of 50-05.00.

Senior Colin Moleton stands 19th in the nation in the javelin throw with a top distance of 220-11.00 he posted earlier in the year at the Rhodes Invitational. Fellow senior Bryce Willen ranks 26th in the country in the javelin throw with his best mark of 217-09.00 turned in at the Rhodes Invitational.

Junior sprinter Jonathan Juin stands eighth in the NCAA in the 100 meters with a top time of 10.28, while freshman Mike Granger is 28th in the event with his top mark of 10.47. Juin also ranks 11th in the country in the 200 meters with a top time of 20.90.

In the 400 meter hurdles, junior Lee Ellis Moore is fourth in the nation with a top time of 50.00 set at the Alabama Relays. Sophomore Carson Blanks is 14th in the country with his top mark of 51.41 he recorded at the Alabama Relays.

Distance runner Martin Kirui is fourth in the country in the 3000 meter steeplechase after recording a time of 8:51.29 last weekend at the Florida Relays. In addition, the Ole Miss 4x400 meter relay team of Blanks, Juin, Matt Daniels and Moore rank 29th in the nation with its top time of 3:09.37.

The women's team stands 31st in the nation in the latest USTFCCA poll and features six athletes ranked in the top-30.

Junior Sofie Persson is seventh in the nation in the 400 meters with a top time of 53.42, and she is 12th in the country in the 400 meter hurdles following her best mark of 58.33. In addition, Persson also runs the final leg for the 4x400 meter relay team that is ranked 13th in the NCAA with a top time of 3:37.33.

Sprinter LaJada Baldwin is ranked 10th in the nation in the 400 meters (53.57), 14th in the 100 meters (11.53) and 19th in the 200 meters (23.76). Baldwin also runs the first leg of the 4x400 meter relay.

In field events, junior thrower Betty Williams is 10th in the NCAA in the shot put after turning in a top distance of 53-05.75 at the Florida Relays. Junior Juliana Smith stands 30th in the country in the hammer throw with a top mark of 186-00.00 she posted at the Rhodes Invitational.
