Pomeranz Fans 15 In 4-1 Win At Georgia

4/9/2010 | Baseball

ATHENS, Ga. - Drew Pomeranz tied a season-high with 15 strikeouts and Kevin Mort hit his second career home run as No. 15 Ole Miss (22-9, 6-4 SEC) rallied to defeat Georgia (10-20, 2-8 SEC) by a score of 4-1 on Friday night at Foley Field.

Pomeranz (6-0) picked up the win as he held the Bulldogs to one run on four hits with three walks and 15 strikeouts in a season-long 8.0 innings of work. The 15 strikeouts tied a season-high set against Oakland on February 26. Brett Huber picked up his third save as he closed out the ninth for the Rebels.

Justin Grimm (2-4) suffered the loss for Georgia as he allowed two runs on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

"I don't know if we could have had a better college baseball game played here tonight," said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. "We had two big leaguers going at each other tonight. Drew was tremendous. We gave up the run (in the fourth) and he just came back and stayed focused and put zeros on the board. He never let it faze him.

"Our offense kept battling and put some pressure on them. I don't think people realize how good Justin Grimm really is for Georgia. But we kept barreling up on the ball and were able to take the lead and then extend it down the stretch."

Georgia struck first, scoring on the Bulldogs' first hit of the night with an RBI triple in the fourth inning from Kyle Farmer that scored Levi Hyams. Hyams reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning after a walk of Peter Verdin as Hyams tried to bunt Verdin over to second, but Pomeranz threw to second for the out.

Ole Miss answered in the seventh with a single run after loading the bases with no outs. Miles Hamblin came up with a sac fly to left field to score Matt Smith and even the game at one. Smith extended his hit streak to 15-straight games with a single to open the inning before Matt Snyder walked and Zach Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bags.

Georgia started a rally in the bottom of the inning, using a lead-off double from Kyle Farmer to get things started. Farmer then took third on a chop groundout to second. Pomeranz then struck out the next two batters to end the threat and keep the score knotted at one run each.

Kevin Mort then hit his second career home run to put the Rebels on top 2-1 in the eighth inning, sending an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left center.

The Rebels extended the lead in the ninth inning, pushing two more runs across to take the lead out to 4-1. Miller singled and stole second to open the inning before scoring on a single to left from Alex Yarbrough. The freshman second baseman scored two batters later on a single from Kevin Mort that gave Ole Miss the three run lead.

Ole Miss and Georgia will play the second game of the series at 3 p.m. CDT on Saturday at Foley Field.
